Even Echoes Die

What is it bred in man that makes   Him covet trophies, so he takes   The horn from off the rhino's head,   The kudu, oryx and is led   To kill the tiger, lion too.   We'll only see them in a zoo   If men go on the way they are.   And even when there are laws to bar   The sale of tusks and body parts,   There are still those with hardened hearts,   Who poach and feed the evil scheme.   Today where wildlife used to teem,   Are echoes of the leopard's scream.   We hear, from in a fading dream,   Gorilla's hoots and zebra's cries.   We witness as the thunder dies   From hooves that numbered thousands strong,   Continuation of this wrong.   It doesn't matter where you go,   In nature's kingdom, people know   That birds or beasts or finny friend   Must all confront this tragic end.   One day, as generations rise,   Will come a time, to no surprise,   When animals succumb to men.   I wonder what they'll prey on then?
