The Café Riposte

The grizzled maitre‘d  sat me at your window sat me at your linen’d table in your sequined chair the three-legged affair: one a casted fibula another pegged the third hobbled by your impertinence was that lightning? storm’s brewing again the menu he presents his pristine white gloves cover the oozing fester the mantra of wines dulls the chef’s indiscretions cordially paraded in waiter-ese but the empty seat across distracts but reminds passers-by gaze glance go on silver-on-china’s faint susurrations of mated patrons food noise pattering feet doors were we so incompatible? Chambord appertif Martini, Champagne, Cote de Rhone Linguini Key Lime Pie Vessels pass in the night exchanging fog horn blasts misted mannerisms misunderstood once friendly hands forget A glance at time A clap of thunder, An applause? Table cleared, crumbs swept away yet you linger, like smoke - an odor that never quite leaves the room I must stop dining here. Vultures sit within view Of the too bright light; my one remaining eye seems too valuable - Perhaps my permanent reservation  could be moved to nine: When lights are low and suns release their shadows.
