Silence

She listened at the hotel door with its brassy,  tarnished number. Silence Ears straining, she moved closer, startled when her cheek brushed against the door's cold surface. Silence The hallway in the tiny French hotel was long, shadowy.  Empty. The only sound, her own released breath, emerging as a low, tortured moan. Silence Looking down at the doorknob, she thought of turning it. But, if it was unlocked, if it opened, if they were  both inside, together?  In the end she went back into her own room, lay down, and put fingers into her ears, blocking out... Silence

Additional Notes:
I have tried to write about this experience many times, but it always came out filled with too much anger. This time, I have used a 'spare' approach. Please tell me if it works! Thanks!
