THE AUSSIE TRUCKIE There is nothing more Australian than a trucky, In his big rig heading out along the tracks. Be it bitumen or gravel that he drives on He’s as Aussie, as the cargo that he stacks. There is nothing more Australian than a trucky, He’s a welcome sight to see along the way. Without him there would be no food on shop shelves, He works in hail, rain, or sunshine every day. He set out with rolls of rope and tarps and chain links, Has his telephone or twoway by his side. He drives the miles up there while in his cabin, As he thinks about Australia with such pride. They have to break their loads at roadside depots, As the big road trains cannot go through the towns. And the truckie has to almost be a genius, To know the weight on each wheel, that’s allowed. The Nullabor’s the road that takes them eastward, Or the northern highway into Darwin town. There’s the Barkly and Pacific that they drive on, Up to Queensland, fill with diesel, then come back down. Truckies know the highways inside out they travel on, With their thirty hour trips and sometimes more. There is affinity with every other driver, Yes, the Aussie truckies met those boys before. They will always be a favourite with the farmers, These men we cherish out along the tracks. They're are loved, by us who live in isolation, In the homes we’ve built in country way outback. Truckies may look dirty with the oil and diesel, That they wipe upon their trousers and their hair.
