Underground Activity

Coastal tree roots  wend silently in sand like tentacles in the bluff, birthed through gritty ground-- dirt-encrusted troops drawn downhill, pulled relentlessly by thirst. A spruce’s filamented roots, like tenuous feelers, reach deeper, seek sustenance; unseen offspring bind old trees, prevent fatal falls. Do they grow down that branches may reach skyward; work unobserved, that only leaves witness sunrise, and watch stars?
