Silence As Deep As The Blackest of Nights

"Alright, a car ride! I love car rides! Why are we stopping? This smells like the vet." THE NEXT DAY... "Surely they wouldn't leave me? Where am I? What did I do? I know, this is like before. When they left me in the cage with those people who fed me until they came back." They will come get me soon." "It sure does seem I've been here a long time. Haven't eaten any shoes lately, so what's my crime?" "Moose the Bernard next door, doesn't make any sense. Says he was sent here to die, for jumping the fence." "Peewee the Chiuahua in the cage across the way. Says they bought home a baby in his place to stay." "Muffin the Spaniel has been here the longest of all. Boy is he lucky, he got a walk down the hall." "Moose quit your howling, you got the cats yowling!" "Peewee quit singing you got my ears ringing!" "WHAT OH WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU ALL!???" Silence as deep as the night then descended, the air was so tense as pure fear ascended. "I don't know what's wrong here, I can't possibly see, whatever's the matter, but you scared the hell out of me! Seconds to minutes to hours to dawn... Then suddenly I realized Muffin was gone!" "Old timer listen, it's time that you knew... Why you are here and what you can do. You have a home no longer and are sentenced to death. Unless the humans who stroll here, you work hard to impress." "NO! I won't listen, what you're saying's untrue!  My people love me as them I do too!" "I was the first pup to live there, the first one to cuddle. Then I helped them raise all of the others. I took them romping into the woods. I took the blame when they weren't so good." "Moose said to me sadly,"You're time's at an end, and the heartless of man you don't yet comprehend." "As I looked into Moose's brown hurtful eyes, I saw the truth and started to cry. How could those who once loved me leave me to die?" The door swung open at the end of the hall.... "My cell mates started jumping and howling in vain. All of us singing out Mooses name. Moose did he cower when she called him come hither. It broke my heart to see him in fear shake and quiver. I do have to say his last walk he went fighting. But it was in terror, with no growls or biting." Silence as deep as the night then descended.... "I wait... Days have gone by and my family has not yet returned. I am scared and lonely, so lonely for the people I love. They don't want me anymore. I have been the best dog I could. I want to go home and feel them scratch my head, and maybe a tidbit at dinner. Oh well, it's my turn to take a walk." "Peewee got lucky, he said good-bye yesterday.  He is still young and begged really good in puppyish bounds, a home he found. As for me, I'm too old and don't really care. It's for my family that I despair." The door at the end of the hall just opened.... "It's a girl. She reminds me of my masters third pup. She is putting on the leash, ahh she scratched my head. I think I will pull her along and hurry this up. I sure would like to run outside once more and find a deep smelly pond to jump in." "I wonder if my people still think of me? Who is that man? He don't smell so nice. Hey puppy come back,PLEASE!!!! LIsten, all the dogs are howling good-bye. Good-bye to you! I hope you find homes!" "OUCH! That pinched. NO, no-no, not in there please... It's cold and dark, please...no.. It's too dark, I wanna see the sun, please... Tired, so tired.." Silence as the blackest of night then descended........
