Saluta' Snowshoe

Driving into a Kentucky sunrise, snow sparsely covering the ground, geese still migrating, skis on the rack, snowflakes falling, making no sound. A southern breakfast under our belts, the Appalachian Snowshoe awaits. Tis’ a journey oft’ visited with my son at my side, my, oh my, what a lovely ride. Onward, climbing upward through the foothills of W VA; Willie Nelson on the air, raspy voice, mellow guitar. Sun sneaks a peak every now and then, white blankets more. The journey is long, the road is winding; the reward at the top, a piece of heaven, as the boards beneath our feet sing the song we love to hear. Carving powder eights, cruising the blues, listening to the wind across our face. This will always be our own free space. All the while my son at my side, my, oh my, what a wonderful ride. Darkness falls, the chairs are frozen, time for a rest, these weary bones; time to reflect His Majesty’s creation, the Appalachian mountains, our Snowshoe celebration. Memories of times past, a future promised, snow on the pines, crystal angels on the ground. In silence we share, in solitude take pride, all the while at each other’s side, my, oh my, what a ride, what a ride.

Additional Notes:
Snowshoe def: In this case, a small ski resort in West Virginia, not the wood framed webbing used to traverse the snow, or the snowshoe hare, although many of these abound on this island in the sky in the middle of W. VA. This piece was penned on a recent trip to Snowshoe, with my son, who has accompanied me several times on this particular ride.
