THIRTY BUCKS A HEAD We barely just broke even, so what now have we got. We even worked from dawn till dark, taxation took the lot We paid a fortune out in tax, and then approached the bank. To get a loan for sheep and food, they looked at us so blank. They gave us figures far too high and said “now that's the fee To establish this account of yours, take it or leave it be”. We got our teenage daughter, to sit down at her keyboard. And try and work the interest out, see what we could afford. “By golly said our daughter, they’ve charged forty five per cent. The very highest cost should be, no more than twelve, I’ll think". The years of drought we had no crop but still they make us pay. The bank said “No deal on this loan, see what the stock firms say”. “We’ll let you have the money,” is what the stock firm said. "But, you’ll have to buy your sheep from us at thirty bucks a head." “Thirty bucks a head we said, this farming's getting bad”, “They’re out to get us all they can” we feel that we’ve been had” " What will happen to the rest, the wool and all the meat. If we pay thirty for the head, you've worked that nice and neat". "You’ve farmed before, or have you not", the accountants smile was wry "For thirty bucks you get the lot, they do not have to die".
