SACRIFICE ACKNOWLEDGED

Young man I do not know you but I saw you here today, as another war that must be fought is getting underway. You said that you were shipping out to the country of Iraq, and added that you didn't know if you'd be coming back. I looked into your eyes, took your hand in mine, and wished you all the luck you'll need to get you through this time. I marveled at the calm that I saw upon your face, I respect the job you're doing for all the human race. I shuddered as I pondered all that you might go through, for a peace that must be bought, by brave young men like you. I marveled that you'd fight for all of us who stay, to continue with our daily lives in a peace for which you pay. I know that in the years to come we'll not have to send our sons, to fight this evil in the world because of what you've done. I'll pray for you young man, and ask the Lord to be beside you as you fight this war, for the likes of me. There is no way to pay you for this sacrifice you give, But for me to pray "Lord, keep him safe and let him live!" Then you said goodbye, and you turned and walked away, I watched until you left my sight then went on with my day. I'll think of you in the days to come and pray that never more, (when this conflict finally ends), will there be another war.

Additional Notes:
This poem was inspired by a young man from the Minot Airforce Base who stopped by my place of employment this past week to say goodbye to the men I work with. He said he was shipping out, had no way to know when or even if he'd be back and added that he volunteered to go. I have the utmost respect for the young people in this country who are willing to fight for their country, freedom and our way of life. May God go with them.
