Fears and willow-wept tears.

On one strange day how strange was the way    the winds picked up from stillness, All birds did fly as darkened the sky     and man and beast in illness Sought now to hide from a wicked tide    as into their homes they shirk, Letting an evil race grow in the place    where dark hearts in shadows lurk.        Said the Unshaved Hermit: “Strange are the days and strange are the ways    that the clerics search for meanings Behind the clouds which o’er us shrouds    our spirits that once were gleaming. But in these dark times there are no rhymes    for the tunes of bards unsung; We lock our doors from the howling moors    or the dead we shall walk among.” Old Bumblestaff first felt fury’s wrath    from a wolf that gorged his sheep, He sliced off it’s jaw with his old saw    and quietly drifted to sleep. That eerie night he awoke with a fright    the beast had returned from the dead, It crept in soft for the sash was aloft    and devoured his bearded head. The warriors’ tombs were willful wombs    as emerging from the graves They ate old and young and some they hung    and kept the rest as slaves To see who can mine the most watched by ghosts    and the victors crucified, They played in shame and to spite their game    not one tear was cried. From over the meadows’ knolls wandering trolls    place rocks on puffing smokestacks, As screaming out they rush there soon is a hush    when clove asunder in their tracks. Lost souls drift into night amid dancing sprites    and soaring dragons with blood-stained fangs, When o’er the tones of the undead moans    the laughing gargoyles sang:  “All thou may’st flee to the crying trees    for ye hearts shall flee not far, Thou wilt run where, to the horrid yet fair,    that flourish where demons are? Drinketh from the flagon amongst smiling dragons    below our cloud covered stars, It is thy fears and willow-wept tears    that flourish where demons are!”       Epilogue: Glancing around a deserted town     the old hermit has to see That most are dead or in vain fled,    into the darkness to be free. As he lay his tainted breast down to rest    dreaming of sweet blonde ale to cope, He softly wept as he lonely slept,    For all he has left is hope.  He’ll carry on ‘till the work is done    and the town has been rebuilt, Digging graves in the land with spade in hand    and broad-sword by the hilt, For he never knows if a storm will grow    and unleash its wrath on men; He’ll stare at the skies and days gone by    ‘till the winds pick up again.
