THEY SAID HIS SONG WILL STEAL YOUR HEART

They said his song will steal your heart Like sweet nectar captures the bee. As you listen the tender words impart One sweet kiss and you belong to me. Tonight he sang verse so sweet and low And his melody rang true from the start. As he scanned the room, searching every row Looking for her; the one who stole his heart. She wasn't there as he looked at Table-8 While fumbling for words he should know. He told himself she must be running late 'Cause she'd never want to miss my show. All year she sat there every Saturday night As the lyrics of poetry filled her mind, Seducing her with new love that's so right Yet taunting her 'bout the love left behind. Her broken heart, he crumbled in his hand And tears welled up just waiting to fall, She'd not blink for this beguiling man Who's owned by another--clothes and all. His breath grew short as the love song faded And his searching eyes grew wet with tears. He knew he'd lost her; too long she'd waited And dissolution filled his heart with fears. He struggled with the words; somehow he made it And he began to ponder where life went wrong. Cupping his hand so his eyes were shaded Still hoping to find her before the next song. At intermission, a crowd gathered in the hall Fans were waiting to touch him or get a hug. While he responded to them, one and all His heart was dead as if it were drugged. Next week he'll be on stage and sing by rote; He's traded his heart to become a big star. Tell me whom you love, the Philosopher spoke, And I will tell you who you are.
