Empty Vessels

How will this November dawn find you? Stretched out on the rack of the day. At the kitchen table; that four square range to your world You’ve been counting your sleep in minutes not hours Like the pennies, not pounds in your bank account. Undisturbed.  They’ve lain there for years Dust since the state stepped in. You found out early enough; Poverty is the first law. It has drawn down the shutters, Narrowed every parameter Till life is seen as if through an aperture. I have walked these streets. Seen people like boulders Unfinished by their maker The chisel removed too soon. Faces fixed in the wind Between empty grimace; loaded accusation Worlds slipping through the hour-glass. Long ago like you, Their dreams were blown off course To drift like debris in the dog dirt. There’s a view from the bedroom If you care to look. (For I know you have). It takes you out across the city To a low range of hills where it seems Peoples’ lives are golden. Men are imagined kind and handsome They don’t hit out to bruise. Their children’s faces are smiling Lives rising. Falling. Always with an even pitch. Place your hands at the window   Let them glide. Send up a wish to bring back Some of this gilded truth. Now clasp the curtains! Close them! Blind enough to think That this could ever be you. The evening finds me laughing And it’s a hollow laugh. For in this monied world of ours Who am I to take out the ruler And measure what a life is worth. When expediency casts its net To catch each and everyone Halfway between heaven and earth.
