In Defense Of Sitting On The Fence

Most recent birth's date, September fifth, nineteen' forty-five; Out of the vast tunnel, flailing, quickened by first breath; Like others entering, wailing, surrendering to being alive; Soon, childhood's naivete shattered by knowledge of death. Disturbing thought, death, for a mere child's contemplation; Human, unique end-product of environment and genetics. What to believe: religion, fate, scientific explanation; In this world shared by fairy kings, soldiers, and heretics. Generations of parents teaching children rules; be clean, Study hard, love your Lord, keep your word, never cheat, Try and always mean what you say, say what you mean. Love, honor, and duty; all rolled into a package neat. Questioning each, one by one, revealed flaws; I found most fell short of their stated convictions; Found the rich and powerful could make their own  laws; Learned not to trust the most general predictions. Should I have, in the process of aging and "growing," Stood up for a cause without so much bother; Agreed with the experts, the so-called "all-knowing"; Not weighed each so carefully; one side, then the other? Through decades of straddling the middle, my mettle Has been duly tested exercising free choice; My freedom in neutrality; not be forced to settle Issues, offend, or defend with gusto my still, small voice. Notwithstanding, the true spirit of peace, or nonviolence,  Might be preferable to some, even most, but not all. Still, I cannot leave my post and, yet, cleave to innocence; I must leave foresight and hindsight to make that last call. Whenever I begin to plunge, headlong, that deep divide; Multi-faceted mirrors appear, confusing points I need to  face. I wonder: In that moment before birth, had I, again, just died; Or, still aware, somewhere, in-between; seen answers all in place.
