City of Blood

City of blood, your abomination- Defiled by idols and shedding of blood Brought wrath of God, “day of indignation”,  Promise prevails, “never again to flood”,  Your prophets conspire to pilfer the land,  Your priests blaspheme and depravity speak,  Your prince destroys with the palm of his hand,  Your people oppress and distress the weak,  Jerusalem! You despise holiness,  On the Sabbath you spew profanity,  If just one man would stand up to confess,  A city saved from its own vanity,  Will I stand in the gap amidst the flame?  Will I pray to God when He calls my name?

Additional Notes:
(my first sonnet) This poem was written as a result of reading The Book of Ezekiel, Chapter 22 Ezekiel 22:30-31 “So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. Therefore I have poured out My indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; and I have recompensed their deeds on their own heads,” says the Lord GOD.
