The Death of a Believer At the end on his own bed next to a dim lamp with the shade yellowed by years of pipe smoke casting the only color left on his face he died in pain from stomach cancer somewhat eased by morphine which kept him from saying anything intelligible to his son who saw no purpose in the death despite the minister who only left the boy wondering how the existence of a god adds meaning |
