The Death of a Believer

At the end on his own bed next to a dim lamp with the shade yellowed  by years of pipe smoke casting the only color  left on his face he died in pain  from stomach cancer somewhat eased by morphine which kept him from saying  anything intelligible to his son who saw no purpose in the death despite the minister  who only left the boy wondering how the existence of a god  adds meaning
