Gros Ventre

From time out of mind the river Gros Ventre Did gnaw and grind at the noble bedrock Of old Sheep Mountain with forested slopes, Home for deer, elk, bear, sheep, and mountain goat.  Prolonged rains and heavy snows saturate Coarse-grained membranes: porous sandstone and clay. When wet, the layered substrata can slip: The trees, the rock, the earth, the regolith. On June twenty-third, nineteen twenty five, Echoed gnashing of teeth, the land did slide Through the canyon one-mile, the sinless stream Swallowed by: roots, red rock, mud, and pine trees. The earth-dam gave birth to Lower Slide Lake, Gros Ventre corralled; her big belly irate; Digested the feast of the valley full Of ranch life: homes, barns, horses, cows, and bulls. On May eighteenth, nineteen twenty seven, From spring's snowmelt, Lower Slide Lake did swell, Burst with the rage of an animal caged: Rushing, racing, and ravaging in haste.   Bill Kelly's town lost all but on high ground, Only the church and school had not been drowned, Chaos to Wilson, the Hole (valley) full Of town life: homes, barns, horses, cows, and bulls.   For time without end the river Gros Ventre Will fill her big belly beneath the rock, Remembering that many lives were lost, She'll quietly flow as though they were not.

Additional Notes:
Gros Ventre (pronounced "grow vahnt"), the name of a Native American tribe, is French for "big belly". The town of Kelly was rebuilt and is still located on the East side of Jackson Hole (valley). The town of Wilson is 40 miles down-river and is nestled at the base of the Teton Mountain Range on the West side of the valley.
