Good-bye to Florence

Lay down your stethoscope You men and women of the lamp Your toiled years of answering    the bells, Of laying of hands on the hurt,    dying, and the bewildered Lay down your stethoscope    sisters and brothers of the lamp    remember the times you've    held their hands, laughed, and cried    with the young, and old, and mentally infirmed Now is your time to lay down your stethoscope. Who will remember your years    at their bedside? Who will hold your hand    when you need comfort? Where do all the old nurses go? Gone to better times every one Your fallen arches and sore back    are testament of your work. Your early hours - your even longer hours    are beyond the attestation of your contract Oh have faith you weary nurse Stand at the mantle, and hand off your torch. Stand and take pride. Look back with passion. You have done the world of service Now it's time for you!
