The Hipster’s Poem

The class struggled  to stay awake as Mr. Cassidy explained the poem  it was relevant it was powerful it incited riots but not fifteen minutes before lunch five years ago he had given up  reading the poem aloud  unable to translate the passion the class stopped responding now they read the poem  with the sanitized bio in Literature for all Ages then answer chapter summery questions when he first read the poem it was called, "A poem that revolutionized consciousness" he started wearing black sweaters getting laid felt alive but there was no revolution no matter how hard he hammered on the typewriter the only revolution was in art

Your last stanza is the best started wearing black sweaters getting laid...great stuff. It is too bad that we keep teaching old poetry to children and young adults instead of teaching them first the stuff being written by people their age in their time and letting them fall in love with poetry before tackling the masters. I will look for this on the winners list.

This one hits home with this Old Hippie It is impossible to translate the feelings of a time. We just end up looking foolish when we try. Especially fifteen minutes before lunch! I was surprised at how this flowed when I read it aloud, looking at it I thought it looked quite jagged. Good job of personalizing the passing of an era without coming off as superior sounding. Just to soothe my ego I would change the last line from "the only revolution" to "the true revolution"
