Still the Eyes Watch

A rustic cabin deep in the woods hidden among the pine and oak trees A retreat for newlyweds looking for privacy to capture a moment in time They arrive with expectations of blissful love and passionate romance But they are not alone Glowing red eyes watch intensely as they leave the safety of their car and head for the stairs The door swings open as he laughingly  lifts her up and carries her across the threshold Still the eyes watch The light of day is fading slowly as darkness of night overpowers it Shadows form on the wall from reflections of the fire now burning  in the fieldstone fireplace He opens a bottle of wine and they lay together embracing before the glowing embers A faint scratching at the door Startled they jump up and stare motionless The howling begins A sound so eerie it chills them to  the bone They sink to the floor huddling together in fear and praying for the light of dawn Still the eyes watch and wait.
