Derek's Day

Welcome to the real world Derek, hope it wasn't too rough of a ride. We know it's quite an adjustment at first, so don't feel bad because you cried. Your coming has been such a source of joy and cause for deep reflection. Just to think of all the years you'll need so much loving and protection. But it will be a labor of love, one for which we've yearned. More so because the love we give we know will be returned. Sometimes you'll question why it is we do the things we do. Because we care we'll always try to do what's right for you. We'll always do the best we can to ensure your needs are met. And teach you things you need to know, and remind you when you forget. There's going to be tough times ahead and heartaches none too few. Though Mom and Dad will be your guide, don't forget we're learning too. But just like it was when you were only seconds old, and you were scared and crying because you were wet and cold. When this cold cruel world comes crashing in and your heart is filled with despair. Though all the world's against you, remember your family will still be there.

Additional Notes:
Like many of the poems I write, I am not the one involved. Sometimes I write about what I see. This I wrote for a very close cousin of mine on the occasion of their first child. I was close to them and knew how they felt and how important of an event it was, so I took the time to try to capture the moment. It happened a long time ago. I decided to share it with you in the hope it might make one or two of you smile.
