APRIL FOOL (1987 Kennebec River Style)

From upriver to down-river it came, went -  The rain and torrents Bringing all, taking all, Yet leaving something we’d call Desolation, Devastation. Little twigs, big ones, stumps, trees, logs, Home remnants, boards, shingles, doors, Cats, bugs, dead fish, dead birds, dogs, Roofs, furniture, pictures, carpeted floors, From upriver they came And went down with the rain. Sandbags stacked high and Pumps wheezing sighs and Numerous other futile activities Buttressed Kennebec towns and cities. With fury and force incomprehensible The river was now unrecognizable, Thrice widened and deepened, Erasing shoreline, each bend, And things there before and after –  A deluge of disaster

Additional Notes:
I thought this might be appropriate for today's submission. The Kennebec River runs down through central Maine, and it was truly amazing to see its power, taking houses and what-all with it, going through the windows of the IGA store 8 feet deep. I would, if re-writing, probably do away with all the unnecessary capitals, but it's been published this way [old style], so I'll leave it. This was previously published in book #4, Against the Tide (2003), Goose River Press, Waldoboro, Maine.
