Once In A Blue Moon

Puddled moonlight wades Hardesty's pond August moon promises stars far beyond what the eye can see. I wade through childhood years sitting on grandma's porch waiting for the moon to turn blue. On scorching summer nights she soothed a fussy child who sat with her on old porch swing beguiled by the full of the moon swinging to rhythm of gospel tunes. I fell asleep waiting for the moon to turn blue. There was never enough money "once in a blue moon" she found silver coins in the cookie jar just enough for ice cream. The cool, sweet, strawberry treat made the pebbled mile in barefeet, tolerable. "Once in a blue moon" the dogwood bloomed. It was my favorite tree. Each year with determined hands she planted one for me. She was best at Sunflowers, fat loaves of homemade bread dripping with butter and blackberry jam. "Once in a blue moon" the dress sewn from printed feedsack, was perfect. I whirled, lifting circle of cornflower blue anxious for the next school day. Tonight, gram,  I hold your weakening hand grateful that "once in a blue moon" grandma's like you fill empty places. You tucked love into my  growing years so well I lived them with the delight of a child on a carousel.
