Paradise

in the beginning of summer we used to stand barefoot on the asphalt like petrified trees burning the soles of our feet without grimacing or shuffling I was always last to move my feet being slow to cook and my will being slow to change hiding the blisters and blackened skin from the unsympathetic eyes of adults who don't understand the purpose don't remember what it's like to run barefoot through the grass across the asphalt chasing the ice cream man's melody without fear of burning the already toughened feet the air smells like dirt we race across the field towards the canal floating lazily down in innertubes ending up miles away sailing over in the rope swing and dropping gracefully in not fearing the brush and branches hidden by the murky water just relishing its cool caress I don't remember when those days stopped when you, father, forced me to pretend that I was high society when you forgot where you were from I sit across from you sipping wine discussing politics or business but I'd rather be in a diner eating eggs and drinking coffee listening to conversations about cars and 4-H watching old men play card games than here in this cold dining room holding my head high in my ice princess manner perfected for just such occasion and my gown clings close to my body as your wife's jewelry glitters in the light I refuse to wear the jewels you buy me putting the shining expressions of love tight in a metal box until I can fathom what's to be done with them eating foods we cannot pronounce conspicuous consumption the stench of money overcomes me and I dash out to run barefoot through the grass and I will never forget where you're from, I will never forget where I'm from.

Additional Notes:
It was said once to me about my writing that when i read I am more nakedly exposed than I ever will be in life. I think this poem is an example of that.
