Pastoral Days

The sun bends forward to caress           bronze bodies             as they stir the grass           like ageless offspring of time As horse’s hooves scrape an eager earth            of roots etched in the deepest green            while drift-dogs worry sheep poised           about abundant an pasture ground When without warning day pauses in interlude                      for a night that creeps unobserved            as sleep spreads a contentment            that lounges over the land.
