In the dark

in the dark  I whisper I want... with a certain sense of finality thankful you don't hear me and ask I think of ridiculous things did I forget to turn the oven off? lock the door? how your hair feels like a kitten's how the leaves have turned red for spring and you will leave me in the fall how I never really look at you but love you just the same in the dark I whisper no, please don't... with an increasing sense of urgency wishing you would hear me  and listen you breathe alcohol fumes in my face as your unfamiliar hands find their way beneath my clothes I remember my mother's face voice shaking as she spoke "With a face like that, you'll always be a victim, but I love you just the same." in the dark I cannot speak hot tears streaming down my face
