The Patient in Rm. 524 The tiny woman lay on her bed Her feet drawn underneath her in fetal position I introduced myself saying, “Hi, I’m Arnie, your Nurse for today" She must have jumped a foot off the bed Gently, oh so gently I tried to get her to talk To tell me her story “I won’t talk to you” she sobbed I didn’t understand why Then she blurted, “Because you’re a man” Little did I know she was re-living an experience Something had triggered her to remember Something like a smell, a sound, or a touch I felt hurt even somewhat angered After all I reasoned to myself A Nurse is a Nurse She had a male Psychiatrist I felt hurt because I didn’t understand There was no explanation I later learned it was because there were female Nurses on hand While we had no female Psychiatrists then I was a new grad at that time She was my first patient My first sexually abused patient {It is estimated that 70% of women have been sexually abused in their lifetime while only 7% are males} |
Additional Notes:
More so for the men, a lot of them don't report the abuse. Why? Because they're MEN. Although
their's a shame factor for both sexes, men until recently never reported the abuse.
