A Just Cause

“Off you go now lads” as he shrilly blew his whistle  Above the din and the roar. Man was I sea sick as I dropped off into war!  When the Sergeant Major said “go” -  we went, And jumped into the flow; I was tired and spent. The bullets were flying left and right It’s easy to say I was in a fright Jerries to the right Jerries to the left I crapped in my pants – totally bereft. The sea was salty and I was cold Here I am in France only 16 years old I lied to get in as my brothers before What the hell did I know about fighting in a war? It was May the 4th my first day there We fought hand to hand from door to lair Then we were in Arnhem a name I didn’t know The bloody krauts put on one hell of a show But we were better that’s for sure We put an end to that maniac called “der Fuhrer”. On May the 5th we got the word That Germany surrendered;  we gave them the bird So you kids are here because of men like me Who dropped into a land to set them free We knew nothing about these Dutch But I can tell you about this much… We (Canadians) left four thousand soldiers In their soil , a country with only windmills and no oil Today I’m 84 and sure as hell I don’t want to see Another war…I’m glad we’re all free.

Additional Notes:
This is not about me but is a true story of a kid that lied to go to war. The Canadians liberated Holland for which they are eternally grateful. Queen Beatrice of the Netherlands was born in Canada. She sent tens of thousands of tulips in commemoration to the capital city (Ottawa). It's a beautiful sight to see in the spring. Americans have a similar happening in Washington, DC with all the cherry blossoms sent over by the Japanese in grateful commemoration. Today, May 8th marked the 60th anniversary of DDay. By the way, the Germans surrendered to the Canadian Forces at Wageningen, Holland. They surrendered on May 5th, 1945. At that time the Canadians and the Brits had been in the war since September 10th of 1939.
