The Day The Earth Stood Still Forty three seconds into hell It was a hot summer day of August 6, 1945 Everybody was going about their business Out of the East the bombers flew high, going about their business of destruction Little did they know What would entail Forty three seconds… The plane – A B29 Super fortress with the nickname “Enola Gay” The pilot – Col. Paul Tibbetts and a crew of 7 The mission – to bomb Hiroshima The bomb – Atomic Welders goggles in place for pilot and crew Bomb away at 31,000 feet Forty three seconds… A climbing right turn And one look back into history Forty three seconds later, A blinding flash of light and a mushroom cloud 20,000 feet high Total lives lost in Hiroshima on that day 142,000 (approximate) It took only 43 seconds 43 seconds into hell from a bomb with a code name of “Little Boy” It was only the beginning! |
Additional Notes:
For those of you that are unfamiliar with this story, the name Enola Gay was the name of the pilot's
mother.
The bomber is now enshrined in the Natioanl Aironautical Museum in Washington, DC. I've been there and it's
awe inspiring. Along with that is the original Kitty Hawk plane, etc. Truly a fantastic museum.'
That wasn't the end though. When Japan did not immediately surrender, a second atomic bomb was dropped on
Nagasaki on August 9, 1945 and the estimated lives lost there was 50,000!
The American pilot's to the man have said they are glad they dropped the bombs because it potentially saved
tens of thousands of troops not counting those that already died in battles or prison camps.
