What makes a hero?

Ernest Alvia “Smokey” Smith Dead but not forgotten Not a big man, but stood as a giant. Born in Canada, Smokey enlisted in an army unit of The Seaforth Highlanders. On a cold wet day in October of 1944 Smokey was ordered  to cross the flooded Savio River (Italy). Attacked by a troop of 3 Panther tanks, two self propelled guns, and 30 infantry. Situation - hopeless. He and another soldier set up their anti tank weapons as the Panthers attacked wounding Smith’s buddy. Grabbing his anti tank weapon he fired and disabled the tank. Ten German soldiers advanced firing their guns. Fighting back with his Tommy gun Smith killed 4. The Germans retreated. The fight wasn’t over. Another Panther appeared spewing gunfire. Smith shot disabling the tank, while dragging his buddy to safety. The operation continued which led to the capture of an important bridgehead. For his valour, above and beyond, he was awarded the    Victoria Cross He died August 5th, 2005, the last person to ever hold this distinguished award. A hero – not a sports hero but a hero who helped end a bloody war.

Additional Notes:
The Victoria Cross is the highest decoration that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.First presented in June of 1857. The metal comes from the bronze of Chinese cannons captured from the Russians at the siege of Sebastopol (the last great battle of the Crimean war of 1855. The VC has been bestowed only
54 times since inception. There were 182 in WW 2, and only 11 since. There happens to be one VC given to an American, and that is at the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetary.
