Epiphany # One And so he left With not a thought Of looking back. And so he left. The word has it that he Put one foot in front of the other Until he covered thousands of miles A new adventure every day for this Ageing hitchhiker Alone on the highway He sang a song to himself He did not understand the call His quest was simple Find what you’re seeking But do not go beyond that And so he left Years ahead of his time Years behind his time He realized he could have been something He could have been something Not recognized for what he was He had no power Or so he thought. He first read Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass in a restaurant He did not know the man or the book A beautiful young woman gave it to him It became (sort of) his bible The pages flew They became dog eared He passed it on to another Miles Oh those lonely miles His leaves of grass was the macadam The pavement was hot but he did not suffer He learned He sang He shared He saw He saw things locked in his mind Finally he understood That change was inevitable And change he did Was it for the better He thinks so Even though he left a world behind Friends and family Left behind There are days, oh yes there are days When he wishes that things could be Different But they will never be He knew he could never retrace his steps It would be like chasing his shadow Like chasing wet footprints that dried Like Don at the windmill He realized there isn’t an answer to His past… He could only keep going forward Wherever forward is ! |
