Amusement Park

I see him first, glaring at the Terror Ride, a piece of a man in a cheap wheelchair. His shoulders and arms bulge his shirt's sleeves but a child's legs dangle beneath the seat. His face has a madman's glare. I see him often as the day goes on. He pulses his wheelchair around the park, his ride pass fluttering, tied to his wrist. His mouth is pink with cotton candy fluff. A pink puff flutters in his hair. The operator and a passerby put him in a Kiddy Boat, fasten the belt, show him the boat's brass bell.  The ride begins. One hand trails in the water, over the boat's side. The other hand bangs the bell. The boats float past us, boat-boat-boat-boat-boat. The operator and the passerby stare at the trees, stare at the girls prancing past. The madman bangs at the tarnished brass bell. The bell clangs, ring-ring-ring-ring-ring. Watching, I tell myself, hoping it is true, 'The only hell and demons in this place lurk in the Terror Ride.'  I walk away. I still can hear him swatting his boat's brass bell. Clang-clang-clang-clang-clang.
