Footprints in Dew

I saw footprints  this morning The imprint of your bare feet wet with dew Under the merciless sun they’ll soon dry up  and disappear   But after each evening in the cool of the morning the dew returns Soothing all it touches

Just something I noticed on the driveway as I got in my car heading to work.

Ken, I think observations are the best way to soothe the soul and share it with others. That is why I like poetry for it gives one that opportunity to express a visual they have seen and the thoughts that come to mind. Well done and the structure was good, the thought complete. Well done.

Ken, my first inclination with this verse is your comment. Had you not made that comment, there would have been mystery and mischievousness, magic and sadness, life and remarkable- hope and resolve, as it is- your comment takes away all the images of magic in the readers imagination- and its just a neighbor walking cross the lawn. Now, after my critique of your comment- I move on (sans memory of said comment) to write to a magical piece. You title, “footprints in dew” bring images alive of the passing of someone, special or ordinary, but caught for a moment in the traces left- of magic and faeries, of dastardly and villainous- or sweet and appealing- great title. It was morning when the footprints were found. The detective could immediately surmise, there was mischief about while others slept. When all should be in bed, the passing (pretty much had to be after midnight when the ground finally cools below the airs temperature)- and someone was about- “Bare feet” – not a civilized shoe wearer- maybe fairies passing, or a cat in the night- or peeping toms or else, but there is the evidence. You never tell us who/what/genus/ect. You use “merciless” for the sun- merciless only to the dew produced footprints, or to the maker of the prints- watching from a cool damp place for night fall to allow another performance. Almost magically the “footprints disappear” and it is easy to ascribe it all to the sun- but some of us know better. And then the night falls again- it soothes, and we know, by the presentation- there is a good chance of another phantom visit, or waltz in the night- while we are fast asleep. Yes- I canonize before holiness is established- but image, had you not added your comment; what might have been found in your magical verse.

Very descriptive my friend and so well expressed. The images presented are wonderful and soothing to one's soul. We lost mom this past Thursday and each time I come into the house I look for a sign thinking she might have stopped by on her own journey home. This could be a reflection for many things and many ways your own life has been touched. Thanks for posting and sharing. It was Jerry's mom who passed this week but I might add she was the best mother in law ever so of course the in law never counted. Take care, God Bless, Claire

Hi Kenneth....what lovely thougts so early in the morning! I know it is true that we poets often see things that "non-poets" do not...or at least we see them in a different light and can transform the ordinary in something quite unusal and beautiful as you have done here. A terse poem that creates elegant images. Written in free verse and without punctuation works very well....brava! Marilyn
