The Departure of the Fishing Boats From Joppa

With heart in tune to nature’s song, And spirits light, I press along       At break of sleepy day, Just as the sun its bright beams throw Around the head of distant â€œPo,”       Then rest upon the bay The earth is still; save here and there A timid bird-note strikes the air       In soft, melodious lay; But soon the fisher’s song is heard Anon the sliver waves are stirred,       As boats glide down the bay. An off-shore breeze and early start At day break, cheers the boatman’s heart,       As onward, toward the bar His dory floats, on ebbing tide, And point for the sea-rim wide,       Sails into the sea-stretch far. I watch their sails till lost to sight, O’er waves that glint the golden light       Of soft mid-April sun, Then turning homeward, breathe a prayer That God may guide their boats with care,       Safe home, when day is done. by Myron Oakman Patton

Ken, Another gem and I'm so appreciative of you sharing these wonderful works with us. Please let me know when the book is available. Your great-grandfather's works fire the mind and are so very enjoyable. I doubt had he been able to post these himself that anyone could have offered suggestions for improvement, they are a delight just as they are and a true treasure. Best always, Lora

Hi Ken...Your grandfather was an extrodinary poet and it would be my guess that he was an extrodinary man, as well. This poem speaks very well of his talent. It is musical with its lovely rhyme and excellent word choices. From what I have read, of his work, it has that old world feel that I love and try to copy in some of my own poems. His talent for that type of verse far surpasses mine but it never hurts to try! I wish he were alive so he could read the critiques he has received...but then maybe he knows anyway. Thanks for posting this. Marilyn

Kenneth, Thank you for posting this lovely poem by your Great-Grandfather. The imagery and metaphoric expressions are excellent. The fisherman, a time honored livelyhood and a great theme for poetry for generations. You do not have to be a fisherman to enjoy these words, but having been a fisherman all my life gives me a special pride of association. I am glad I had a chance to read this poem, for the joy it has brought me. Thank you, Paul

Ken I honestly love to read your great grandfather's work for the words just come alive with the images he may have been looking at when he wrote them down.....this one is no exception for it is filled with much of nature, the sound of the birds, the feel of the sea, the feel of what it might have been like to be one with the sea......his words always blend well together, the rhyme is always on and the images are full force. Thank you and please let me know when your book of his work is completed I would love to buy one. It is no wonder you have such a way with words yourself. God Bless, Claire
