Had I Apprenticed

The ages, nay the aeons  played upon me, mine  Subtle though indelicate                to time. Places that exist where  words become beacons Mere reality so slight  a lone thought to mention.  The corona of the sun is               my shore. Laying in its warmth   to soak its power evermore.  I return to all of dreams,  to yearnings that whip to tide Where I become the depth                oceans hide. And the embrace of all those              that have died.  While nothing I can leave               of import more But to insist goodness with                     no power Is but a candle that will not light.

James, I think this great. We always wonder as we age if we've been a benefit to the world and others. I believe you above most, have given greatly to to all. you end, While nothing I can leave of import more But to insist goodness with no power Is but a candle that will not light. this is such an important statement. It is good to be good, but to use the power of your essence to better all is using your gifts. Love I believe is the push that makes change. If we love life, we fight to protect it. If we love others we stand up for them. As if the world were our family, we connect and want it's best. You know love, tthus you can extend it. That's the difference with people. How can anyone rest when the children and peoples are being harmed. I weep, as you and try my hardest to make a difference. I like this rhyming; return to all of dreams, to yearnings that whip to tide Where I become the depth oceans hide. And the embrace of all those that have died. You are the depth the oceans hide......I salute you. Dellena

JCH This is elegiac and moving, and at its best in S3 and S4. "The corona of the sun is/my shore" widens the scope of this poem considerably, as does "Where I become the depth/oceans hide/And the embrace of all those/that have died." These are impressive lines. It feels to me, however, that the power of this poem, building as it does through S1-4, fizzles out in the didacticism of S5. "Goodness" as an idea seems to appear (in the overall context of the poem) apropos of nothing. The stanza is not without merit in its own right, but in my view it compromises the experiential height reached by the end S4. Best always, MAH
