Pale Moon

They cast them in, they cast them out, all around and about. They circle `round my empty head while I plead slumber on my bed. A rose, a sash, a drop of wax; Still girded up my lover sighs while drops of night dew form in his eyes, beguiling my spirit and vexing my lies. "Begone", you say - but "nay" I am not stone. Blood buds bloom on my heart. Does it pain to die? I wish not to find it so, for insipid death bemoans my fate. I plead one more chance to live, at least one small speck of time. To dance the tune of ancient rhyme then twirl...away...away...away. The pale moon says, "No, not this night," and your brow furrows - marking my soul somewhere on the opposite side where you cannot see. Yet, you know my tomorrow's and I would feign deny their truths. Another dream waits to be dreamt, another tune my heart will play for you, till the pellets of rain  dash strong against my flesh, beating me down to a false death. A whippoorwill sings as the sun's invisible rays caress my body making me pliable again for your touch. © 1976  by Donna Saulsman Friedrichs
