The Australian Lighthorsemen The last of them, Is now gone. Faded away at 101. As that old soldier’s Sight dimmed, Did his mind’s eye Still recall the sight Of all those horses, All those young men Who set out to help The empire Defeat the enemy? So few are left Who even remember that time When those youths and their mounts Sought to achieve the nigh impossible. He now seeks his mates where cloud steeds And riders are one. Cirrus clouds, stirred by hoofs, Ensure that when we, who are left, Look up, we shall not forget. © 1999 |
