LIFE'S CUP

Had I thought my heart would fill With wonderment of life until I savored every sweetened drop And never wanting it to stop I clutched it tightly to my breast Knowing I'd captured life's very best. When I was an old, old man I opened up my tight clenched hand To my amazement and surprise I saw nothing before my eyes Then I heard a crashing sound As life fell, shattered, to the ground. As I bent over to pick it up So I could fill my empty cup A puff of wind came breezing by And blew my life into the sky And so, alone, here I stand On barren ground and sinking sand. All I savored I have lost It was all my life it cost Because I hugged it to my breast I didn't get more, I got less Life must be given away To have it come back every day It does no good to hold the prize If it vanishes before your eyes The more you keep life for your own The more you'll find yourself alone The lesson I've learned I won't forget The more of life you give, the fuller your cup gets.
