The Crow

The crow carks a relentless sound resonates drifting above carrion held together by fraying skin. Buoyant like ships at sea his talisman is flesh a legacy he can’t unlearn, eyes like darkened glass are transfixed, gripping talon extremity he uses to rip and tear. Soaring, searching, vigilant for food his shadow swallows light, a paradox of nature with velvety ebon cloak and wicked beak, a carrier of prey that turns on an imaginary axis and circles overhead. Standing on the plain, between paltry shrubs, I watch the bird. Emotions leak as sweat from my brow. What plans does the crow own as he holds me in his stare? Chilly winds wrap me in silence, broken only by my whispered breath and wings pulsating in concert with the breeze
