The Republic and How She Stands

How stands the Republic, the solid Republic? Knee deep in the mud In the mud and the mire The mixture of sweat Of a people's sweat Of the salt of their sweat And the brown, green earth In the mud and the mire The mixture of tears Of a people's tears Of the salt of their tears And the brown, green earth In the mud and the mire The mixture of blood Of a people's blood Of the salt of their blood And the brown, green earth Of lands far and afire In the mud and the mire The mixture of flesh The salt of their flesh That was wrapped in a bunting A star-spangled bunting And turned with the earth The brown, green earth To become the mire The mud and the mire Where stands the Republic The salty Republic The solid Republic

Additional Notes:
For those - from Valley Forge to Wounded Knee to Birmingham and on to Viet Nam and beyond - upon whose bodies and souls this solid Republic stands.
