Apparitions Sent

In a tundra of apathy, spirits hide under eves and wait for shadows of twilight to burst from cobweb cocoons  They descend on the city, dash though windows to flicker TVs, and  computer monitors,  ruffle newspapers, which are already screaming but no one notices when there is Perrier to drink and remnants of sirloin  to feed to the dog Sometimes, they gather like locusts  hover, descend as an angry  cloud thundering, but impotent to do anything but flood mobile homes Often, small boys capture them in  jars where they  flail,  banging into fireflies. They scream but like the screams of a dolphin in a tuna net, no one hears them This is not an appeal. Do not form a committee to save them I would not purposely kill one, but they are not harmless Some things are better extinct.
