American Beauty

With my daughter      I watched “American Beauty”      She did not want me to watch it alone      Now I know why      This film is a cocktail of human emotions      blended and served chilled      in a story that spans a few days      in the life of a “typical” family      in North America      It is a potent brew that includes      a myriad of flavors      such as      lust  guilt  regret      self-doubt  insecurity  depression      hate  anger  denial      even love and joy      and much more      and finally death with a smile      because the latter gives meaning to life      and opens a door to what comes after      Under a light topping      of crimson rose petals      all is served in a punch bowl      the essence      of what it is to be human      So go ahead and drink of it      But remember the adage      Don’t mix your drinks      and above all      don’t drink alone
