Downcast Soul

Be sad For it is the only course Right now. If sadness be not Thy heart’s final spark will be quenched And vacant Will be the dwelling of thy passion. Its form Still and senseless lay Before  The alter of desire. Vanquished when pain abandons thee Then exiled Thy spirit harbors no response at all. Turn not away, my soul From the pall that covers thee It hides not thyself nor life Know that blackness is the light For few of us see ourselves accurately Until it is dark.

Additional Notes:
1997. Beyond the obvious, this poem was partially prompted by the belief that sadness is an underrated and very valuable emotion that more people should embrace rather than eschewing. The poem isn't perfect, but it was structured as it is for a certain punctuating effect.
