She Waits

When Kate speaks you listen. A southern drawl  so slow and deliberate heard this far north delights all these Bar Harbor fishermen. Fishermen's wives  spill out their envy over backyard fences. They never liked her. Never liked their men taking their morning coffee at the Day's Catch Cafe. Carl and George fall over themselves trying to gain her favor. Gunther and Jack drop their coins  in the jukebox they play her favorite song over and over again bring sprays of wildflowers to fill her grandmother's old, crystal vase. They knew not to ask for a date. The only man in her life was doing time in Davy Jones' Locker. Did you know the ocean speaks to women weeping? Kate stays here waits for an understanding of its whispers.
