Goodnight Johnny

slumped figure on the staircase head between knees, hair hanging down barely brushing a lifeless arm apart from the fist clutching  a single sheet of paper she looks up, anticipating the turn of the key in the lock repaired yesterday drooping tear-stained face her eyes reveal in an instant what her lips cannot utter we should never have let him join the ranks of the camoflauged a letter cannot convey the loss  of the downy-haired child held for so many years in the arms now devoid of strength the mother outlives the child in a brutal twist of destiny the problem lies in who to blame society, democracy, war the grim-faced man who slaughtered without thought of his family ambivalent destruction of a life worth living dying in a pool of mud, sweat, and blood he cries out for his mother for a final goodnight kiss
