Deep South

Her smile skims across the surface of her face, superficial, never penetrating her soul. An ivory-tipped fingernail scratches a crimson mosquito bite upon her inner thigh. Attempting to ignore the sultry South Carolina summer heat, the kind of weather where your skin feels wet no matter what time of day, where dogs' tongues droop to the ground. It's too hot to move, too hot to sleep. She clatters ice cubes in a glass and dreams about igloos. Decked in black sequins for her debutante ball, Father got out his gun to greet her beau in the front hall. Escape has always been on the agenda but the days keep passing by. In the south, she's resolved to live and die.
