Unexpected

Her neck and back hurt It can be hard to walk  Always looking down. Too cold or too hot It never seemed just right And often the wrong clothes. Step after step after step Sometimes diversions she could actually enjoy A brook or a stream or a tree or an eagle For those, she wouldn’t look down. Then she’d move on. Step Her feet were cut now The ground was so unkind Unless she looked down. It was out here somewhere Of that she was hopeful But its disguise was good. Exhausted, she sank down Digging in the dirt Frustration and fear welled Then she stopped her assault Feeling her hope decline While bloody hands caressed the ground. As she looked down. But the ground was not the same. Beneath her gentle touch A warmth and glow rose to her She saw a flash and spark The light answered her hand From a source not before seen. Delighted, she scratched and dug The warmth and glow increased When she brought the stone out. She laughed. In this abandoned field Humanity and hope passed by A forgotten stone lay covered. Useless to other owners Promise still unfulfilled It had been left, discarded Yet beneath her hopeful caress It responded... ...As she looked down.

Additional Notes:
A fantasy, that is also allegorical. It is an alternative format that I decided to present.
