Flashbacks

Flashes like lightening, images, fragments of my past Unclear pieces bound together by a single thread Unraveling the story hidden in my head Triggered by senses remembering the pain The smell of stale cigarette smoke clinging to clothing Uncovered light bulb Rough hands, callused and dry Whiskers like sandpaper on my face Finding myself in the middle of a crowd Staring at passing strangers not focusing on faces Creeping up on me like a stalker Stealing my trust, leaving me shame   Brazen disregard for all that I hold dear Pilfering all my dreams for a future Laughing as you pass in a tone of demented ignorance Flirting with my rage  Frustration straining my sanity Bound up like a bomb about to explode Crazed adrenaline, just wanting to escape Looking for a place to hide, someplace safe Never knowing when the images will appear Paranoia and fear Family and friends are sincere Wanting to help, keeping me near
