A Feline Beam of Light

He lazes in the window, With eyes at half mast, Watching the passersby As if in a trance … At times he turns his head slightly toward me A soft look on his face Begging of a scratch behind his ears, Never bored, simply at peace. Yet the look on his face When a fly drops by in curiosity! He knows he must get him, Never mind the screen between he and the flying insect. Sometimes he just lay on the rug, Belly-up, content, or simply trying to amuse me. Perhaps just a plea to beat the blistering heat, Or a reminder that it’s time for a belly rub. He sleeps on my pillow, I hold his tiny paw and concentrate on his purring, His slumbering bliss my tranquilizer. His purring a sanctuary  He gives me peace after a hard day’s work. When I am sad,  He curls his little feet around my neck, As if to say “you are loved.” He gives me great comfort and joy. I presume he sleeps all day, Though the disarray of my throw rugs Tells me he has experienced a blitz Of play in my absence Often he lay in my lap, Sleeping, dozing. Relaxing in a place that knows no harm I love him, he is beautiful; a perfect creature. Sometimes he plays with his toys, But a plastic bottle cap is his favorite playmate. To me he is a precious being A beam of light with a sixth sense to my moods. He reminds me of the necessity of peace  Many of us need, in an often harsh and bitter world. His name is Teddy, my baby cat. He is a constant reminder that I need to live in the moment.   Let go of the past   And cease from obsessing about the future He is a constant reminder that the present moment counts. Existentialism is his forte. I have much to learn from him.

Additional Notes:
I actually have four cats (a bit excessive I know, an excentric cat-lady). They bring joy to my life and constantly remind me to pause when agitated. Teddy was actully meant as a gift for my grandmother, however she cried excessively because she grieves so much when they get sick or pass on. Hence, I got Teddy by default. He is a great gift and full of bountiful love.
