Sonnet for My Mother and My Father

Yours never was a cloying, clinging love In need of sidewalk scenes to whet its will, Or constant proclamation that could glove An insecure and fleeting cause.  Yet Still, Like lightning bolts across a cobalt field Of night, I saw your love strike bold and bright, In moments etched in memory, revealed  In slightest touch, in knowing glance, delight In being, being in delight, caressed In care and fondled by the joy that knows  The deeds and fruits of love do more attest  To its persistence than some showy clothes. If by example learning is most blessed, The love you shared will be your best bequest.
