The Glass Cave

Fish, fish in the tank Whom do you have to thank For being in this wet, glass cave As his beautiful, observable slave? With nose pressed and fingers tapping Against the glass, as if he's clapping As you swim to and fro Well, where else have you to go? You get fed once a day The rest of the time you can play And do whatever fishes do With all the privacy of a zoo. When you don't want to be on view You hide behind a rock or two  For just a little time alone Thank goodness for that hiding stone. I wonder if you ever yearn To give your Master his own turn? At being the observable one for you And his whole life put up for view? Yet, as you look, you already see He has his own cave, doesn't he? It's filled with air and in your eyes He sure swims funny for his size. You can see he doesn't care If you stop and look and stare At what he does for hours on end. Did you ever consider him your friend? You know this glass cave may be a winner, Keeping you from being another fishes dinner. © 1972 Donna Friedrichs

Additional Notes:
This is just for fun. . . My husnand and I belonged to the Aquarium Society in our city. We had loads of fun including entering fish shows where we would show our fish and some of us would display novelty tanks. That was my specialty. I loved doing it. You should have seen my "People Tank" Took first prize every time. . . unless Ihad another novelty entered :O} o modesty here LOL
